It is interesting to compare the various works, and to note that very few of them agree on any given detail. First flight dates, pilots names, and locations are often different in each book, not necessarily by days, but occasionally by months! I have attempted to sort out the confusion by checking data against what few official records still exist, but it is totally possible some data is incorrect. Contrary to most popular opinion, even fifty years later, I believe the consensus of researchers is that the airplane, and the decisions concerning it, did not have a material impact upon the outcome of the war. Less than 200 Me 262s were in operational service at any one time, despite the almost heroic efforts of Messerschmitt to manufacture over 1,400 of them within 18 months.

Museum as an H-23. the model designed to transport up to eight special forces troops on night operations. However, recent materials from the R.A.F. Museum indicate the this aircraft was a an H-20 modified into the transport sub-type H-20/R1, capable of hauling 16 paratroops in addition to its three-man crew. In this book, we have chosen to accept this description, and refer to the plane as an H-20/R1 throughout. Nothing is known of this aircraft’s service with the Luftwaffe. Following the surrender, the plane was moved to France along with many other aircraft that were to be shipped to the United States for testing. However, the transport ships readied for the job were not large enough to haul all of the aircraft, and this was sent instead to the 56th Fighter Group’s airfield at Boxted, arriving there on July 2nd.
